Know everything about ASTHMA in Children

Under special posts of Children Health care, you will notice series of posts related to critical treatments.

Today, lets discuss about Asthma.
HealthcampIndia.Blogspot.com
                               Pic: Renown health
Asthma is a long-term (chronic) lung disease that causes your child's airways to become sensitive to certain things (triggers).

Several things happen to the airways when a child is exposed to triggers:

  • The lining around the airways swell.
  • The muscles around the airways tighten. The airways make more thick mucus than normal.
  • All of these things will cause the airways to narrow.
  • This makes it difficult for air to go in and out of your child’s lungs and causes the symptoms of asthma.
Causes

The exact cause of asthma is not known. Researchers think it is partially passed down through families. But it can also be caused by many other things such as the environment, infections, and chemicals.

Risk Factors

A child is more likely to get asthma if he or she:

  • Is age 5 to 17 years old
  • Has family members with asthma
  • Has allergies
  • Is around tobacco smoke
  • Is around air pollution
  • Has another health problem such as sinus problems and being overweight
Symptoms

Symptoms can occur a bit differently in each child. Children with asthma have times when they have few, if any symptoms. They also have times when symptoms flare up. Symptoms may include:

  1. Cough that is either constant or comes and goes
  2. Wheezing or whistling sound that is heard while your child is breathing
  3. Trouble breathing or shortness of breath while your child is active
  4. Chest tightness
  5. Tiredness
  6. Cough at night
  7. Noisy breathing
  8. The symptoms of asthma can be like other health conditions. Make sure your child sees his or her healthcare provider for a diagnosis.

Diagnosis

To diagnose asthma, your child’s healthcare provider may recommend these tests:

Spirometry. A spirometer is a device used to check lung function. It can be done in young children, including infants.

Peak flow monitoring. A peak flow meter is used to measure the amount of air a child can blow out of the lungs. This measurement is very important in checking how well your child’s asthma is being controlled.

Chest X-rays. This diagnostic test uses invisible energy beams to make images of internal tissues, bones, and organs on film.

Allergy tests. Allergy tests can show if your child has allergies that may be causing or worsening asthma.

Treatment

Treatment will depend on your child’s symptoms, age, and general health. It will also depend on how severe the condition is.

  • Your child’s healthcare provider may refer you to a pulmonologist.
  • This is a doctor with special training to treat lung conditions.
  • Your child may also be referred to an asthma and allergy specialist.
  • Your child’s treatment is based on how severe his or her symptoms are and how easily they are controlled.
  • Treatment includes finding triggers and ways to avoid them. It will also include medicines.

Know everything about ASTHMA in Children

Asthma medicines include:

Bronchodilators. These medicines are used to help open the narrowed airways. They may relieve coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or difficulty breathing.

Anti-inflammatory medicines. These medicines help decrease the inflammation in the airways.

Anti-leukotrienes. These medicines help decrease the narrowing of the airways. These are usually given by mouth.

Immunotherapy. This can be used for severe asthma attacks in children ages 12 and older.

Complications

Asthma that is not well controlled may cause:

  1. Severe asthma attacks
  2. Lasting damage to the airways
  3. Increased time in the hospital or the emergency department
  4. Missed school or other activities
  5. Prevention
  6. Asthma can’t be completely prevented.

There are steps you can take to reduce the chance of your child developing asthma. They include:

  • Avoiding secondhand smoke
  • Avoiding air pollution
In most children, asthma flare-ups can be prevented by:

  • Avoiding known triggers
  • Carefully managing symptoms
  • Taking medicines as instructed
  • Living with
  • You can help manage your child’s asthma by:

  • Finding out your child’s triggers and keeping him or her away from them.
  • Giving your child medicine as directed to prevent symptoms.
  • Creating and keeping an Asthma Action Plan.
  • Closely watching asthma signs and symptoms to know when they are getting worse.
  • Knowing what to do when asthma gets worse.
  • Work with your child’s healthcare provider to find the best way to take care of your child’s asthma. There are guidelines for children from newborn to age 4, ages 5 to 11, and ages 12 and older.

The more information a person with asthma has, the better the asthma can be controlled.

When to Call a Healthcare Provider???

Call your child’s healthcare provider if your child’s symptoms are not well-controlled.

For example, your child is waking at night with symptoms or is having trouble with daily activities.

Call your child’s healthcare provider or get medical help right away if your child has severe
symptoms.

These severe symptoms can include trouble:

Breathing
Sleeping
Walking
Talking

Key Points:

  • Asthma is a long-term (chronic) lung disease that causes the airways to swell and make more mucus, and the muscles around the airways to tighten.

  • Asthma symptoms include trouble breathing, wheezing, chest tightness, and coughing.

  • Staying away from those things that cause asthma symptoms (triggers) is an important part of asthma treatment.

  • Medicines are used to prevent and control symptoms during flare-ups.

  • Asthma can cause serious complications if it is not well-controlled.

Next Steps

Tips to help you get the most from a visit to your child’s healthcare provider:

1. Know the reason for the visit and what you want to happen.

2. Before your visit, write down questions you want answered.

3. At the visit, write down the name of a new diagnosis, and any new medicines, treatments, or tests.

4. Also write down any new instructions your provider gives you for your child.

5. Know why a new medicine or treatment is prescribed and how it will help your child. Also know        what the side effects are.

6. Ask if your child’s condition can be treated in other ways.

7. Know why a test or procedure is recommended and what the results could mean.

8. Know what to expect if your child does not take the medicine or have the test or procedure.

9. If your child has a follow-up appointment, write down the date, time, and purpose for that visit.

When we are so determined to renew insurance for vehicle and give it for regular servicing.

Mid year health review 2014

Mid-Year review on your health

We are at midyear 2014. Before starting of this year, each one of us had our own resolutions to maintain, achieve and to realize dreams by end of this year. Its great to have a resolutions list already prepared before start of the year to see oneself a head being healthy and wealthy too.

Assuming, most of us had such a checklist(as I call ,here) prepared and this list as some percentage of “health” part included.

If you are the one who had not yet prepared or not yet seen realizing your check-list. This below information will certainly gives a heads up to see these points are realized.

“Better late than never”

  • Please visit nearby diagnostic centre to have basic health checkup, upon which you will have a clarity how you can have a check on your cholesterol levels, intake of water, Blood cells count and Urine infections, if any.

  • Have you paid your health insurance premium? If not please pay before due date.  Even your employer provides one, it is always suggestible to have one separate (this can be handy, if you are out-of job for a while or if u wish to take a break from your work for a year long.)

  • If you have kids or senior citizens, make sure you are attentive for any ill-health symptoms they show up especially during rainy and winter months.

  • Always keep Phone (Mobile numbers) of family doctor (if you don't have one, any doctor near your residence), Pharmacist and multi-specialty hospital.

  • You have joined in a gym with a curiosity to cut down calories or build muscles, are you still continuing? If not, still you have six months ahead to see what you have dreamt off before joining gym.

  • Make sure you have first-aid kit at your home. If you have one, check essential items are in full stock. If you do not have one yet, please get it as soon as possible.

If you have points to increase this list, please comment below.

Wishing you all to be always healthy and wealthy.

Thank You.

Indian Government declares National Hypertension Day

The Union Health Ministry has conceptualised dedicating a particular day of each year for
highlighting the dangers of Hypertension, the silent killer which, according to World Health
Organisation (WHO), accounts for 7 percent of disability adjusted life years worldwide, and 9.4
million deaths annually.

Speaking at the 23rd Annual Conference of the Hypertension Society of India (HSICON) here today, Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Health Minister, said “I am preparing the Ministry to meet the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCD). Hypertension, diabetes, cancers, coronary artery disease, etc. are projected by WHO as the biggest gnawers of our public health budget in the next decade.”

The roots of most NCD, including hypertension, lie in the modern, sedentary lifestyle, the Minister said. Therefore, more resources than before would be deployed for the objective of raising public awareness on preventive measures and early diagnosis. That is why he feels the need for declaring a certain day of each year as “National Hypertension Day”.

“I hope to marshal the synergies of organisations like organisations in the medical field into making National Hypertension Day a platform for intensive dialogue between government and patient, pharmaceutical company and patient, lifestyle gurus and patient, and so on. It will also highlight the dangers of consuming junk food, alcohol consumption and smoking, physical inactivity, as well as the importance of Yoga for both prevention and management of hypertension,” Dr Harsh Vardhan said.

In India, hypertension is the leading NCD risk and estimated to be attributable for nearly 10 percent of all deaths. Adult hypertension prevalence has risen dramatically over the past three decades from 5 per cent to between 20-40 per cent in urban areas and 12-17 per cent in rural areas. Most people don’t know they are suffering from hypertension until it is too late.

The number of hypertensive individuals is anticipated to nearly double from 118 million in 2000 to 213 million by 2025. It is estimated that 16 per cent of ischemic heart disease, 21 per cent of peripheral vascular disease, 24 per cent of acute myocardial infarctions and 29 per cent of strokes are attributable to hypertension. This underscores the huge impact effective hypertension prevention and control can have on reducing the rising burden of cardiovascular disease.

Dr Harsh Vardhan added, “The loss to the economy should not be measured only by the drain on the public health system caused by hypertension, but also in terms of the productivity loss because hypertension strikes a human being during the most productive years and emasculates the ability to deliver to one’s fullest potential.”

The Minister announced firm plans by the Ministry of Health to give a push to both into hypertension research and free treatment/management under the public health system.

“A three-pronged plan is conceptualised. First, by raising awareness of prevention and early diagnosis among the largely youthful population, we hope to bring down the number of undiagnosed hypertensive patients over the next five years. Secondly, the Government will deploy funds for research into personalised treatment which is the major area of research worldwide into the development of medicines for this condition. And, thirdly, the government health system will be fitted out with departments for individualised treatment of patients,” the Minister said.

The Health Minister elaborated that the effect of hypertension on the heart, kidneys and eyes creates additional burden on the government system. For this, he recognises the need for promoting the Yoga way of life backed up by a culture of having periodic check-ups. The government is therefore factoring into the evolving Universal Health Assurance plan an integrated treatment strategy for medium-to-long term reduction of the population under hypertension.

Family Physician- How to choose one for better health

The famous saying, “Health is Wealth” will never need an explanation. Unfortunately most of us will realize the importance of health when we fall ill, rather it should be otherwise i,e following footsteps of prevention is better than cure.

Mostly major diseases are prevented when found in early stages. For e,g Cancer, when diagnosed at early stages, one can be cured completely.

This article gives you a clear insight about family physician, a.k.a family doctor, who is determined to serve us and can cure from major ailments when approached in time.

Helping Hand:

Whether you are a part of joint or nuclear family. Having family physician is must.
When we(any of family members) fall ill we rush to hospitals or clinics which are near our residence or offices. Once we are healthy, we rarely think of doctors, hospitals or clinics. Keeping a check on these things may not be helpful in our professional career, they are certainly will be a helping hand for our family.Sometimes, visiting corporate hospitals will prove costly even for a small treatment kind or diagnosis. Its not a fault with you or with hospitals. It’s the corporate hospitals DNA which makes you to spend good amount of money for any treatment, whether its a minor or major one.

Choose one family physician, with good academic and work credentials, and make sure you and your family visit firstly, for any health issues.

Keeping informed him about your family health history, is must. This will help him to provide better treatment and can alarm you from major health issues which can be faced in mere future.

Money Less(wisely) Spent : The consultation charges of family physician are lesser, when compared with corporate hospitals. It is advisable to choose your family physician for any day care treatments.
Its fact, that your health insurance comes into action only when the insurer is hospitalized for minimum of 24 hours. Health insurance should be used for critical diseases diagnosis only, for rest visit family physician clinics. These are also called retail health clinics.

Pre and Post medical care:
Say for e.g if a family member has undergone operational treatment from a hospital, after being referred by your family physician. The post-operational treatment will be carried out from residence itself. This is the time where family physician will be more helpful. He guides, motivates and suggests to improve faster from ill-health. He acts as a Psychological support besides your family members support for a patient.

Say for eg. A person has met with an accident and he has undergone with major and critical surgery. Just experience how much trauma he and his family members would have gone through. Thanks to doctors effort, the patient is out of danger and he will be all set to lead normal life say, after four to six months of bed rest. Once patient resides at home, this creates a tough time for family members to carry out post medical treatment. Right, from keeping patient body fresh to feeding him proper food and giving him medicines on time. At this point , having family physician can help you to come out of this tough time. He can appoint a family nurse who can take care of keeping patient body fresh, and feeding food on time. Family doctor can also appoint family phsiotherapits, who can help patient to carry out his trainings suchas, walking with out support of chair or stick, as suggested by consultant doctor(s).

Health Records:

Keeping a list of family physicians prescriptions is must for every one. These prescriptions will be helpful in framing your own family health history. As like, corporate hospitals ,family physicians often will keep any computer based records. Its our responsibility to take care of these. Make sure, for every visit to your family physician you will carry prescription file/record. Although one may not face same health issues, all time. Keeping a record history will keep you check, on your health as whole. This will help you in framing a better healthy life.

Self Treatment Vs. Family Physician Treatment:

Say a big “NO” for any self treatment, may be its smaller one and can be cured with your knowledge. Fewer times, a look like smaller diseases, when not cured with proper diagnosis will turn to be costly in future when this should be fixed with high end technology equipments.

A Tip to carry your own treatment analysis is,  Keep a record of medical prescriptions written by your family physician. On top or backside of prescription do write for what disease the medicines are given for and also re-write the medicines name (as, doctors handwritten prescriptions are tougher to read and understand). With this activity you and your family members are kept well-informed about the diseases and its treatment.
Make sure you keep a word with your family physician in re-ordering the suggested medicines through earlier prescriptions.

Wishing every one, to have one good family physician and a healthy, wealthy life.
