The operating philosophy of the centre is that community mobilization and delivery of medical treatment are specialised fields and that in order to optimise health care delivery both should complement each other.

Ophthalmological services

A major initiative of SSMI is in the area of ophthalmology.
Supported by Vision for All (Switzerland) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, SSMI provides comprehensive eye care for people living in the slums of West Delhi and for School Children.
"In less than three years almost ten thousand refractions have been conducted and almost half of those tested were provided spectacles (at a discounted price of Rs. 75per spectacle for children and Rs.100 for adults); five hundred cataract operations have been performed. An equal number of ocular diseases  were treated. Nearly 8000 children from 12 schools have been screened under the school  screening programme ".

Veggies live longer than meat eaters !!!!

It might be time to replace chicken with veggies!
According to a new study, vegetarians – especially men – have a longer lifespan than those who eat meat.
Researchers from the Loma Linda University in California found that vegetarian Adventist men live to an average of 83.3 years and vegetarian women 85.7 years – 9.5 and 6.1 years, respectively, longer than other Californians, the Huffington Post reported.
In the ‘70s and ‘80s, a series of studies from the university, which has tracked tens of thousands of Seventh-day Adventists since 1958, were the first to show that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters.
Seventh-day Adventists have long been known as advocates of a vegetarian diet.
The new research presented at Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics’ 2012 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo is halfway into completion and includes 96,000 people from the US and Canada.
Principal investigator Gary E Fraser revealed that the new study found that vegans are, on average, 13 kilograms lighter than meat eaters and five units lighter on the Body Mass Index (BMI) scale than meat-eaters.
Vegetarians and vegans are also less insulin resistant than meat-eaters.

Lean people are also more likely to exercise regularly, eat plants, and avoid cigarettes than overweight people, suggesting that numerous factors are boosting the overall health of these participants.
Pesco-vegetarians and semi-vegetarians who limit animal products, but still eat meat once a week or so, have “intermediate protection” against lifestyle diseases, Gary E Fraser claimed.
The study whose population is 25 per cent African-American and half vegetarian found that obesity cuts an African-American’s life span by 6.2 per cent, and across races, the protective qualities of fat in seniors was not seen.
Previous studies have found past about age 85, people who are obese have a lower risk of dying than normal-weight peers.

Arogya Fair 2012 at Hyderabad

“AROGYA” is an exhibition showcasing the strength, efficacy and affordability of the AYUSH systems of medicine which include Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homeopathy. The fair showcases the best and latest developments in the field of AYUSH. The last Arogya fair at Hyderabad was held in November 2005.

Addressing the meeting of AROGYA fair at Hyderabad today, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare said the fair started in 2001. The fair has grown into a country-wide phenomenon with more than 10 fairs organized throughout the year now.

The Department of AYUSH organizes and supports these fairs to encourage the dissemination of information on the benefits and achievements of the AYUSH systems of medicine and for sharing of experiences and best practices between the industry, academia and research institutions.

The active participation of AYUSH drug industries, medicinal plant traders, research institutions, hospitals, publishers and other stakeholders in the AROGYA fairs ensures a wide spectrum of activities thus making it more informative and interesting for the general public.

Shri Azad said that over the past three decades there has been a tremendous resurgence of peoples’ interest in the AYUSH Systems of Medicine, not only in India but also in many parts of the world, including Europe and the USA. This is mainly because of holistic approach towards preventive, promotive and positive health and multi-dimensional aspects of disease management in these traditional systems of medicine. It is a matter of pride that there are 504 AYUSH educational institutions including 111 postgraduate colleges where about 27,000 students are admitted annually.

India has the largest number of traditional and alternative medicine teaching institutions in the world. India has signed several MoUs for bilateral cooperation in the area of traditional medicine and setting up Ayurveda chairs and AYUSH information centres in various countries, such as South Africa, Malaysia and Trinidad & Tobago.

He said that AYUSH has been adopted as one of the core strategies under NRHM to augment effective provisioning of healthcare services. AYUSH services are being introduced at various levels, i.e. in the Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Sub-District and District Hospitals across the country.

The aim is to utilize the AYUSH doctors in implementation of the national health programmes. A national survey report from National Health Systems Resource Centre says that the use of AYUSH and local health traditions is the mainstay of healthcare in many rural areas.

Withmainstreaming of AYUSH strategy under NRHM, the patients’ attendance in the PHCs, CHCs and District Hospitals has increased in the last three to four years.

The Department of AYUSH has set up a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library in collaboration with Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). This initiative, well acknowledged by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), is a patent compatible instrument for patent search and prevention of wrong patenting of products based on traditional knowledge.

AYUSH systems have a long history of use by the communities as it requires simple technological inputs for diagnosis of ailments and preparation of medicinal products. Organization of such fairs in other parts of the country will continue to promote our holistic systems for overall public good, Shri Azad added.

Shri N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh; Shri D. L. Ravindra Reddy, Health & Family Welfare Minister, Govt. Andhra Pradesh; Shri Kondru Murali Mohan, Minister of Medical Education and AYUSH, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh; Shri A. P. Sawhney, Principal Secretary, Health, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and Shri A. K. Ganeriwala, Joint Secretary, Department of AYUSH, Government of India also addressed the meeting.

An impressive Yoga demonstration was presented by MDNIY Yoga students on the occasion.

Universal Health Coverage during 12th Plan

India is embarking on an ambitious target of achieving Universal Health Coverage for all during 12th Plan period. Everybody will be entitled for comprehensive health security in the country. It will be obligatory on the part of the State to provide adequate food, appropriate medical care, safe drinking water, proper sanitation, education and health-related information for good health. The State will be responsible for ensuring and guaranteeing UHC for its citizens.

Addressing the afternoon session of the Conference on “Responsible Use of Medicine” at Amsterdam, Netherlands yesterday, Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Shri Ghulam Nabi Azad said as per WHO`s World Health Statistics 2012,
almost 60% of total health expenditure in India was paid by the common man from his own pocket in 2009. The Report states that 39 million Indians are pushed to poverty because of ill health every year. Around 30% in rural India did not go for any treatment for financial constraints. About 47% and 31% of hospital admissions in rural and urban India were financed by loans and sale of assets.

He said India has already enacted the Clinical Establishment Act. The Standard Treatment Guideline is part of the Clinical Establishment Act. The Act will ensure that unnecessary drugs are not prescribed. During nationwide polio vaccination campaign, India vaccinated 172 million children through 2.3 million vaccinators in 202 million households in each campaign.

The polio vaccination campaigns had a strategy of booth vaccination in earlier years but later the programme added the component of house to house search and vaccination to reduce missed children. Transit teams were deployed at all railway stations, bus stands, markets and highways to vaccinate populations in movement. Special teams were set up to administer OPV drops to the most vulnerable mobile and migrant populations.

The introduction of bivalent oral polio vaccine (BOPV) in January 2010 was India’s innovation based on research conducted in the country. The bivalent polio vaccine helped India to achieve its goal of polio eradication.

Shri Azad said the recommendations of the Consultative Expert Working Group set up by the WHO on research and coordination highlights the fact that very little research is happening in neglected diseases.

Intellectual Property Rights have become a barrier to access to medicines. We need to consider the recommendations of the CEWG and ensure that adequate financing is made available to these diseases so that the poor and the vulnerable do not suffer from lack of proper medicines.
