Heart Healthy Diet - You Ignored All these days

Heart Healthy Diet - You Ignored All these days

This post is part of know how series. Let us understand more on healthy eating options and avoid heart failures.

Heart failure occurs when your heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs.

Since your heart cannot pump well your body holds on to salt and water.

Low Sodium Diet

·      Sodium, also known as sodium chloride, common salt, table salt, or chemical compound NaCl

·      Sodium causes the body to retain fluid. Excess fluid places additional strain on your heart.

·      You must control the amount of salt you eat. Keep your salt intake to under 3000mg/day

If you are already on a diuretic, reduce intake to 2000mg/day

TIP: 1 tsp = 2400mg of sodium

·      Avoid processed foods (Example: ketchup or instant soups)

·      Avoid medications that are sodium based (Example: antacids)

·      Watch out for the words like: monosodium glutamate (MSG), soda (ex. baking soda), sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate

·      Substitute salt with other seasonings such as lemon juice, vinegar, herbs and spices, garlic or ginger

Foods That Are High in Salt

Foods That Are Low in Salt

Fluid Intake

The basic strategy for fluid intake = avoid excessive fluid intake and keep intakes consistent

  • You need to limit your fluid intake. It is recommended that you drink no more than 4-8 cups or 1.0-2 litres per day. Measure and label your bowls and cups to help track your fluid intake.
  • Fluids are anything that is liquid at room temperature.
  • (Example: water, juices, ice cream, popsicles, watermelon, celery or soup are some examples)
  • Juices, tea, fruit drink/punch, soda, and sports drinks all contain sodium, thus they should be consumed in moderation.

How To Reduce Knee Pain and Swelling

How To Reduce Knee Pain and Swelling

Here is the quick read on understanding KNEE Pain and Swelling.

Firstly, the symptoms for Knee Pain and Swelling mostly includes:

1) Overstretching, overuse, or twisting causes pain, which is common during exercise.

2) Repetitive running or jumping can create pain between the kneecap and the shin.

3) When you try to stand, it gives way, and you can't straighten it out. You might hear a popping sound.

4) Pain and swelling behind the kneecap in teenagers and young adults

5)After a collision or an abrupt shift in direction, the kneecap changes shape.

Causes for Knee Pain can be a sign of a variety of disorders.

Try this first:

1) Put as little weight as possible on your knee - don't stand for long periods of time, for example.

2) For every 2 to 3 hours, apply an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) on your knee for up to 20 minutes.

After trying all the available options, still the KNEE pain persists, please visit your family doctor  / Physician / GP immediately

Top 10 Practical Work-Life Balance Tips & Advice for Busy Moms

Top 10 Practical Work-Life Balance Tips & Advice for Busy Moms

“God could not be everywhere so he made mothers” – Jewish Proverb.

Well, the originator of the proverb meant that a mother’s love is universal and unparalleled.  He/she might not have visualized the modern, working mother.

Yet, true to the proverb, today’s mothers are expected to be everywhere – home, office, kid’s school – and if time permits, at the gym, club, social functions.  The list could go on.

I do receive mails with questions on time management by working mother, like

  1. "How working mom with 5 kids balances life" ?
  2. "Effective tips for for working mom"?
  3. "What It's Like to Be a Full-Time Worker and a Mother"?

and the list goes on...….

The fact is Multitasking is a myth.  Perhaps the ultimate multitasking woman was goddess Durga.  She had ten arms, each armed with different arms! Even then, she had a single task – that of killing the demon Mahishasur.  If wishes were horses, working women would like an extra pair of arms!

There are great numbers of books on time management.  The Internet is rife with millions of pages on the topic.  Yet it appears nothing works.  All tips are repetitively boring.

Although well-intentioned, time management recommendations for working parents ignore an important point: there is no such thing as a "one-size-fits-all" answer for any problem or circumstance.

The tips below are in the similar lines but with a different touch.  But some basic tips first.  Even following the tips below will help you manage time tomorrow if not today.

Celebrate work: whether you are in business, service, self-employed or stay-at-home mom, love your work.  Separate home and official work.  Don’t let office stress encroach upon work at home and vice versa.

Celebrate motherhood: don't let life's tiny annoyances detract from the wonderful experience of becoming a mother.

As you sow, so shall you reap.  Good mothering today will bear fruits in shape of dutiful, caring and successful children and better citizens.  Be a gentle yet assertive mom.  Instill discipline without being an authoritarian.

Celebrate yourself: be yourself.  Allow some quality time for yourself.  Be selfish sometime and indulge yourself.  Start hobbies.  Make friends.  Develop a sense of humor.

Celebrate everyday: take every day as it comes.  World will not stop if you worry.

Now some concrete tips.  These tips are intended with busy mothers in mind.  Instead of run of the mill advices like ‘planning’ and ‘prioritizing’, the author would like to offer some very practical tips.

  • Don’t write tasks in a diary or on paper.  Write on a whiteboard in BOLD RED letters.
  • You are not born to please everybody.  If you work for others at home or at work, they will take you for granted.
  • Make your husband and kids take on certain tasks — making tea, chopping vegetables, setting the table, picking up dishes, watering plants, walking the dog – the list is limitless.
  • Kitchen takes up a lot of time.  There may be at least 200+ different items in the kitchen.
  • In the kitchen and refrigerator, arrange all cereals, pulses, spices, sauces, and other food products in clear, transparent containers.

  • Plan your pregnancies.  More than one wailing child will eat up all your time, unless you a supermom.
  • Technology can be a great timesaver.  Invest (with due respect to your finances) in good quality, automatic, programmable  washing machine, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner,  food processor,  oven, toaster, computer, etc.  Pay bills online as far as possible.
  • A neat and tidy home is an indication of a conscientious person. To the extent possible, reuse and recycle, but discard any useless items. Don't get too attached to anything. Be happy by donating or discarding old clothes, toys, books, furniture, and other items.
  • Limit how much TV you watch. Rather, listen to relaxing music throughout the day.

Bowens Disease - Symptoms and Treatment you should know

Bowens Disease - Symptoms and Treatment you should know

Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Situ, commonly known as Bowen's Disease, arises when malignant cells grow exclusively on the skin's outer layer, also known as squamous cell skin. It's an early-stage malignancy that's easily treatable.

While the condition is not life-threatening, doctors want to keep an eye on it because it can infrequently advance to full-blown Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which is an invasive type of skin cancer that spreads to the deeper layers of the skin. This kind of carcinoma is found in roughly 3% to 5% of all instances, and it is frequently undetected.

It's not communicable or infectious, and it has nothing to do with allergies. It is more common in those with a fair complexion who have sensitive skin.

Doctors like to keep an eye on it because, while the condition is not serious, it can rarely progress into full-blown Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which is an invasive type of skin cancer that spreads to the skin's deeper levels. This latter type of carcinoma occurs in about 3% to 5% of cases, and they tend to be undiagnosed.

It's not infectious or contagious, and it's not connected to any allergies. It tends to occur in people with fair complexion, whose skin is prone to sunburns. Because the colour of the skin can be passed on from one generation to the next, the disease may run in the family, but it is not a hereditary condition, per se.

What is its cause?

It is believed that Bowens Disease is brought on by long-term exposure to sunlight. It's also prevalent among people receiving immunosuppressive treatments, and it has been connected with radiotherapy, long-term arsenic intake and the human papillomavirus, which causes genital warts to appear.

What does Bowens Disease look and feel like?

Its inception usually consists of a persistent patch of scaly red skin about 1 to 3 diameters in size, which spreads slowly. Exposed skin is usually the most affected, with one or several patches occasionally spreading to a few centimetres across on the face, neck, scalp, hands and legs. It can be mistaken for psoriasis, eczema or other skin conditions, which is why having a biopsy is advised.

If a lump or an ulcer develops on top of the patch, this could indicate an invasive form of squamous cell carcinoma. Bleeding also rings alarm bells.

Bowens Disease doesn't usually cause any symptoms. Other than slight discomfort when the skin catches on clothing as you put it on, take it off or brush it against the skin, you shouldn't be aware of any pain.

Who can have Bowens Disease?

It's prevalent in women over 70 years of age with fair skin that is exposed to sunlight often. The Bowens Disease patch usually appears on elderly women's lower leg, but it can occur in men as well, and on nearly every part of the body. When it affects the male penis, it's called Bowenoid papilosis, and it looks like a brown patch in the groin area.

Can you have it removed?

Given the fact that it's localised on the skin's surface, Bowens Disease can't be cured as such, but the patches can be removed so that there is virtually no trace of it left. The GP may recommend that you monitor the skin patch, but not intervene in any way. Still, when any form of treatment is recommended, it will usually come with a high cure rate.

Depending on the size, thickness, number, condition and location of the skin patch, one of the following methods can be used to remove the patch:

1. Excision

A skilled medical practitioner will cut out the skin patch, if it's not very large. The area round the patch will be cut under local anaesthetic, and the skin will then be sewn up back into place. This type of surgery will leave a scar.

2. Cryotherapy

Liquid nitrogen freeze is a simple procedure that can be carried out at a GP practice either over the course of several sessions or in one fell swoop. You can expect some redness, swelling, crusting and/or blistering afterwards, and healing may take several days.

3. Curettage & cautery

During curettage, the outer layer on the patch of skin is scraped off after anaesthetising the patient. Then heat is applied to stop the bleeding and help seal the wound. When healed, the area will look like a scab that eventually falls off.

4. Cream

The active ingredient 5-fluorouracil in the 5-FU (chemotherapy) cream destroys abnormal skin cells and leaves the healthy ones intact. As it attacks unhealthy cells, it causes the skin to swell up and turn red, but the inflammation will heal at the end of the course of treatment.

Imiquimod is another cream used to remove abnormal skin cells due to Bowens Disease, but it works by triggering a reaction that makes immune cells attack them. It also causes the skin to become inflamed.

5. Photodynamic therapy

This technique involves shining beams of light of a specific wavelength onto the patch of skin, which has previously been rubbed with light-sensitive cream, and it can be a painful procedure. There will be a 4-6 hour lapse between the moment the cream is applied and the time the laser is directed at the skin, and each laser treatment session can last for up to 45 minutes. The resulting inflammation can last a few days, during which time it should not be exposed to sunlight.

6. Radiotherapy and laser

These therapies also involve sending beams of radiation to the patch of skin. Lower leg areas, where the skin is fragile and tight, can't be treated using radiotherapy. Unfortunately, there are many cases of Bowens Disease where the affected area is on the lower legs.

After having any of the treatments described above, you may need follow-up GP appointments.

How to prevent recurrence?

After you've removed the affected skin area, Bowens Disease patches can re-appear anywhere on the body. Check the skin as often as possible for signs of recurrence. To prevent it, wear UV-protective sunglasses and a hat, and cover your body from head to toe at all times.

Avoid direct sunlight around noon and buy sunscreen with 4 or 5 UVA stars and an SPF over 30. Apply it as specified by the manufacturer, after each swim and no earlier than 30 minutes before each sunbathing session.

If you have a red patch of skin and you don't know what caused it, it is recommended that you see your GP / Family Doctor / Family Physician. They may determine the cause directly and diagnose the condition, or refer you to a dermatologist.
