Having obesity or excess weight raises the risk of cancer, heart and circulatory diseases and type 2 diabetes. Keeping to a healthy weight or getting support to lose weight can reduce the risk of these conditions.
Take a little step
A good first step is to know your numbers. Knowing your BMI (Body Mass Index) and waist measurement can help you understand whether your weight is affecting your risk of developing these conditions.
BMI tells you if you're a healthy weight for your height. Waist measurement tells us more about where fat is stored, and if you're carrying too much weight around your tummy.
Measurement your waist
Find the top of your hip bone and the bottom of your ribcage. In the middle of these two points is where you need to measure.
Checking your BMI
Find out your BMI by dividing your weight in Kilograms by your height in metres squared. Or you can use a BMI calculator to work it out for you.
