We all have heard of the
SARS and the swine flu, but what exactly is Coronavirus?
Coronavirus is considered a major public health risk that has led to
many thousands of deaths worldwide. There
are many different coronaviruses, and they are named for the way that they look
when viewed through a microscope. Because coronaviruses can infect so many different types of
animals, they can be easily spread from one species to another. Experts believe
that this is how pandemics of these viruses begin.
While it does seem scary, it doesn’t have to be as long as you follow these
guidelines for preventing the spread of coronavirus.
Transmission
Coronaviruses are spread in the same way as many other respiratory illnesses, such as the common cold. They are spread by direct contact with an infected person or by touching objects that have been contaminated with their droplets or saliva. The virus is also easily transmitted through the air by coughing or sneezing.
Symptoms include:
- Fever
- Cough
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
Prevention is a lot
easier than cure, so it makes sense to protect yourself and your family from
these viruses. It's important to get vaccinated against the flu and other
diseases that can spread from person to person.
The first thing you should do is wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and warm water. It may sound obvious, but according to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as many as 50 percent of people don't wash their hands long enough or properly.
To make sure you're
doing it correctly, the CDC recommends:
1. Wet your hands with
running water (warm or cold) and apply soap.
2. Lather your hands by
rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather all surfaces including
the backs of your hands, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
3. Continue rubbing your
hands for at least 20 seconds to make sure they are completely clean. You can
count to 60 if that helps! That's about 10 times longer than it takes to sing
"Happy Birthday" twice.*
4. Rinse your hands well
under running water. If possible, use a paper towel to turn off the tap – this
allows you to use one hand for turning off the tap and the other for drying
your hands (which is more effective).

Dry your hands using a clean towel
Finally, if you're sick, keep your distance from others. Stay home if you have symptoms of a cold or flu. Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often.
This is especially
important for people who are at high risk for serious complications from the
flu (elderly people, young children, pregnant women and those with chronic
medical conditions).
- Don't share food, drinks or eating utensils with others. Avoid close contact with sick people while you're contagious (about seven days after symptoms begin).
- Keep surfaces clean by disinfecting them often and wiping down door handles and faucets regularly. Use hand sanitizer before and after touching doors. This is especially important for young children who may not be able to recognize the need to wash their hands thoroughly.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth—these are the most common ways that germs spread.*
If you are traveling
this holiday season:
- Stay away from people who are visibly sick because they could be contagious before they feel ill themselves.*
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, if you feel uncomfortable in public seating areas.
By consistently following proper hygiene methods and not exposing yourself to contact with contaminated areas and objects, you can help prevent yourself from contracting one of these viruses.
